Captains and Crew

Nate Smith:
Nate is a US Coast Guard Licensed 100-ton Master. He spent his younger years on mountain streams and lakes growing up in Montana before moving to the Seattle area. He then started a twelve year career in the crabbing industry out of Dutch Harbor and Russia in the Bering sea. This is how he discovered the beauty and ruggedness of Alaska and its why he eventually moved here nine years ago. He has been working on charter boats out of Seward for six years. The vast amount of time he has spent on the water gives him the experience, knowledge and safety skills to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and fun-filled day.

Captain Eric Higbee:
Captain Eric Higbee was born and raised in Alaska just outside Seward, in Moose Pass. He first got the itch to fish while in the second grade when his father bought a charter for the both of them and young Eric hauled in a one-hundred twenty-five pound halibut. Eric has worked a variety of positions on several different vessels in the Seward Charter Fishing Fleet for eight seasons. The last three seasons Eric has been making his own decisions about where to go and what to use since he was promoted to Captain.

Ever since he caught that first 125 lb halibut, he has dreamed of bringing that same enjoyment to others, and that dream is being fulfilled here at Alaska Offshore, LLC. Eric has been involved in some amazing catches while working with other companies and we were thrilled that he brought that knowledge and success with him to Alaska Offshore, in 2007. He had a great season last year and we expect many more productive seasons to come. He is a customer favorite and clients are eager to return for more of his successful trips. His enthusiasm, experience and character are why here at Alaska Offshore, we are simply proud to have him aboard.

Justin Schoening:
Justin has been working on charter boats out of Seward for fifteen years. He got his US Coast Guard 50-ton Master License in 1997 and has been skippering charter boats every summer since. He was born in Alaska and grew up in Seward. Justin has a wealth of local knowledge of the best fishing holes out of Seward. Justin has been a Captain for many different Charter companies over the years and has run multiple different boats. Justin has relied on his extensive experience to choose the 27-foot Sea Sport SeaMaster as his boat of choice, and is working with Alaska Offshore Charters through his newly formed company, Just-In-Time Charters.

Sven MacAller:
Sven is a very personable and a most reliable deckhand. He first worked with us in the summer of 2006 while on break from his undergraduate studies in Environmental Engineering at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. Sven was born and raised in North Carolina and has enjoyed his time in Alaska as a deckhand and is a customer favorite in the Seward Charter fleet. Sven has excelled in his efforts as a deckhand and all around helper with us. He has been learning the ropes and will be eligible to test for his Captain’s license after this season.
